Jr. SQT

The Junior State Qualifying Tournament was held on August 26, 2007 on the Upper Bay, which has once again become a great fishery, producing many quality fish. Maryland’s junior anglers showed how good the Upper Bay is by bringing to the scales 35 keepers with a total weight of 72 lb. 13 oz. There was one fish over 5 lb., one over 4 lbs., five over 3 lb. and six over 2 lb. Wow!

Nick Dietrick won the 11-14 age group with the only five fish limit of the tournament, weighing 9 lb. 8 oz. Second place went to Austin Neary with 7 lb. Hunter Thomas placed third with 5 lb. 14 oz. Hunter also had the 3 lb. 13 oz. lunker.

Colby Martin won the 15-18 age group with four fish, weighing 7 lb. 7 oz. Second place went to Andrew Sams with 6 lb. 13 oz., and Robert Staley took third with 6 lb. 9 oz. Robert also had an impressive 5 lb. 3 oz. lunker.

Thanks to the Northern Region for a fine job of hosting this event as well as providing all boat captains. Special thanks to the boat captains for making this event possible. Thanks also to MBF President Roger Trageser for providing and preparing the food, to Randy Dotson for all his help, and our Tournament Director, Kelly Cromer.

JWC Qualifier

by Jim Kline

On September 15, 2007, the top junior contenders who previously qualified at the State Qualifying Tournament met at Deep Creek Lake. At stake were two Junior World Championship spots – one from the 11-14 age group and one from the 15-18 age group. The winners from each age group would advance on to the BASS JWC which would be held in South Carolina in February, 2008 during Classic Week.

Upon launching for the blast off, the young anglers and their boat captains found the weather conditions to be cloudy, windy and a cool 48° temperature. The anglers’ spirits were high, however, because of the hope to advance to the big show.

Fishing was difficult this day for the 11-14 age group. All contenders failed to bring fish to the scales, except one, though many said they lost keeper fish. Austin Neary brought one fish in weighing 14 oz., which earned him his second consecutive trip to the Junior World Championship; he, of course, also had lunker.

The 15-18 age group had more success on a tough day at Deep Creep. Only two anglers failed to bring fish to the scales. There were two five-fish limits, and a total of 18 keepers brought in. Billy Staley earned his first trip to the JWC, edging out Andrew Griffith by 11 oz. Billy’s total weight was 5 lb. 11 oz. and Andrew’s was 5.0 lb. Andrew Sams had a 2 lb. 2 oz. lunker.

Special thanks to the Western Region for hosting this tournament. We appreciate Gary Hemp of Hemp Meats for providing the hamburgers and hot dogs, and Rick Lanore for being the "chef". Thanks to all the boat captains; it’s been said before, but it’s true – without you, we could not hold this event. Thanks to John and Jim from Allegany Bassmasters for their weigh-master duties. Thanks also to Chris Flowers for her assistance. Thank you, Motorguide, for providing trolling motor props to all of the boat captains.

Congratulations to Austin and Billy on their respective wins. Good Luck in South Carolina!
