Shives and Cullings Close Out 2007 Season with Wins on the Potomac |
|
One small fifty yard stretch of grass near the mouth of Mattawoman Creek proved to be the honey hole, during the last 2007 Tournament Trail Event on the Potomac River. The tournament, originally scheduled for April 15th had to be postponed due to inclimate weather. This October day dawned with cool temperatures, as 26 boats left Smallwood State Park ramp. Andy Shives and his co-angler Donovan Cullings hardly even burned a cup full of gas and settled down on a grass line not far from the launch. There was a deep drop off nearby and this was the key to both Shives and Cullings success. Andy started his day throwing buzzbaits to the grass edge and then as the sun rose, switched to a small finesse worm. Shives finished the day with 10.12 pounds for the first place finish and plaque. Cullings used a little of everything. Like Andy, Don started with a buzzbait to put a few early fish in the well. The rest of his fish came on a Jig, worm and a crankbait. The scales at weigh-in settled at 7.5 pounds to give Cullings his first win on the riders side in a MBFN Tournament Trail event. Bob Cherry finished in second place on the boaters side with 10.4 pounds of Potomac River bass. The Skeeter Owners Club member used his intimate knowledge and experience of the Potomac River to pull out the number two spot. Nailing down the number third place on the boaters side, was MBFN Angler Of The Year, Ric May. Ric employed a white Terminator spinnerbait on main river wood. At two o’clock in the afternoon, May experienced what every bass competitor dreads. The big engine on his Ranger refused to start. After making some emergency phone calls, MBFN member Kevin Waterman came to the rescue. Switching boats and moving fish, May made it to check-in one minute late and was penalized one pound, which moved him down from 1st to 3rd place. May wishes to thank Waterman for his unselfishness and his willingness to help a friend in time of need. The MBFN congratulates Ric May on his Angler Of The Year win. Tom Deitz boated three fish to take a second place check in the co-angler division while fellow rider Jim Everhart weighed in 6.6 pounds of bass to place third. The MBFN wishes to thank Kelly Comer and all the volunteers who helped make the MBFN 2007 Tournament Trail a success. Without these dedicated volunteers, this organization would cease to exist. We challenge ALL members to consider some form of volunteerism in the coming 2008 season and beyond. It’s up to you to make this organization even better and we need your help. |
